Spring Cleaning

When we think of spring, we think of opening our windows for the first time in months and allowing the fresh air to flow through our homes. While that’s a great sign of nicer weather to come, consider taking the time to do some decluttering, deep cleaning, and organizing.

Here are a few tips to help say goodbye to winter and hello to spring!

1. Declutter
Spring is the perfect excuse to declutter your home. Start with your closets and cupboards and then move on to furniture and knickknacks. Make three piles to organize unwanted items: sell, donate and toss. A classified advertising site like Craigslist will be your best friend for turning a profit on unwanted items that are in condition for resale. Or donate! You can have items picked up for free right at your door. Having trouble figuring out what should stay and what should go? A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it or worn it in a year (and it has no sentimental value to you) you should probably part ways with it.

2. Deep clean
Often done annually or semi-annually, a thorough cleaning is necessary once spring rolls around. Deep grime and dirt tend to collect in corners of everyone’s home. Prepare yourself by filling a bucket with the basics and get scrubbing. Think beyond typical daily cleaning tasks and focus on hidden areas above (or below) eye level. Think about places like on top of shelves, doors and window trim and the corners of your baseboards. And be sure to use the right cleaning products and tools for the job – like cleaners that are safe for wood or paint. Freshening up your home will prepare you for a fresh start.

3. Organize
Organizing to make your life simpler and more efficient may even improve your daily routines. Now that you have decluttered and deep cleaned, take the time to organize according to the way you live. For efficient future cleaning, install hooks in closets to get cleaning tools off the ground. Don’t stop there! Purchase inexpensive bins and labels to organize cupboards and cabinets. By taking the time to organize all of these items you will make for more efficient day-to-day tasks -- and your next decluttering and deep cleaning session may be a bit easier.
