When a Staycation Just Won’t Do

Vacation planning on a budget.

Whether or not you have accounted for your next holiday in your most recent budget, it is important to keep costs in mind before you travel.

Here are four tips on cutting costs while travelling without cutting out the fun.

1. Maintain flexibility
“Going with the flow” is one of the easiest ways to save money on a vacation. When it comes to both destinations and dates, being flexible opens up a world of possibilities and you’ll be able to take advantage of any available deals. Let seat sales inspire the destination and dates.

2. Mind your money
It is important to keep currency exchange in mind when choosing your vacation destination outside of Canada. How far does your dollar stretch once you arrive at your destination? What is the cost of food and lodging there? Also remember that exchange bureaus don’t necessarily offer you the best rate of exchange. Do some research before you travel to determine the most economical way to exchange your money.

3. Consider your lodgings
When booking accommodations, note that some chains include wi-fi and breakfast in their rates. Also look for places with a small fridge or kitchenette so you can prepare some of your own meals or at least keep snacks on hand. Shop around and take advantage of booking sites that might offer package deals. As an alternative to hotels, consider vacation rentals, bed-and-breakfast arrangements, home exchanges and camping.

4. Eat like a local
Meals can quickly eat into a vacation budget. Research and plan where you will eat some of your meals before you go. Many websites can help you find out if there are any special deals. Be adventurous and try the local specialities such as street food and food trucks. Check out the local markets and wander beyond the typical tourist traps to discover interesting, inexpensive dining options.

Setting a budget and doing a little research before you go away will ensure that you enjoy your vacation and return without debt or regrets. Consider setting up a separate savings account for future holidays to help cut down on the preparation time.
